Wright, Zimmer, Haefke, Miller, and Easler also score wins.
Conneaut, OH (July 23, 2017): The Super Late Models made their return to Raceway 7 under cloudy skies with temperatures in the eighties. Eighteen of the ground-pounding Super Late Models made an appearance at the Monroe Center speedplant with Max Blair dominating from green flag to checkered flag. In regular racing action defending Evergreen Lake Park Campground CARS Crate Late Models champion Chad Wright added another notch in the “Win Column” while Ken Zimmer recorded his second Bonnell Collision Service E-Mod feature win of 2017. Defending Bonnell’s Auto Group Economod champion Steve Haefke went to victory lane for the first time this season and Mike Miller collected the winner’s purse in the Campbell’s Mini Storage Street Stock Finale in only his second-ever visit to the track. Defending champion Jason Easler scored the win for his first time this season in the Sunnyside Farms Transit Mini Stock feature.
Billy Henry and Josh McDonald started the E-Mod feature from the front row with Henry jumping into the early lead with six cars pilling up in turn one on lap two. All were able to continue but Brent Rhebergen needed a quick pitstop prior to the green. On the restart Henry led to turn three then gave way to Zimmer. Bill Taylor then spun in four, slowing the race after another lap. Not even a lap was in this time before Percy McDonald, Bill Taylor, Jeff Johnson, Mike Kinney, Alan Atkinson all wound up sideways in turn three. At the end of four Bud Watson was second with Henry and Gary Eicher fighting over third. A lap later Eicher had the position then got by Bud Watson for second with Joel Watson coming to fourth a lap later. At halfway Henry came to a stop in turn two. The restart had Zimmer, Eicher, Joel Watson, Bud Watson, and Troy Johnson the top five. Eicher pitted under caution, advancing the Watson’s and Johnson and bringing Dan McDonald to fifth. With thirteen complete Joel Watson charged low in turn one but couldn’t quite clear Zimmer, making contact and falling back behind the leader. Zimmer increased his lead over the remaining laps, winning by about six lengths. Troy Johnson got by Bud Watson at the end with Jeff Johnson filling out the top five.
Logan Keney and Brad Cole brought the Sunnyside Farm Transit Mini Stocks to green with Cole leading the way to the end of lap one when Derrick Tuttle spun on the main straight. At green Cole again led with Jason Easler second and points leader Bill Fuchs third from tenth on the grid. Zoey Gill slowed to a stop at two laps complete, putting the field under caution the second time. Derrick Tuttle was the next caution on the restart, spinning in turn two. At the end of three laps Cole led Easler, Fuchs, Joe Campbell, and Scott Gill. At four laps Easler was the leader with Campbell next to Fuchs for third but caution again flew when Zoey Gill spun in the main straight. Campbell jumped the start and was penalized two positions. After green Easler pulled out to the lead with Cole second and Campbell up to third over Fuchs and Keney. Campbell was next to Cole at nine laps complete and second with two to go. Easler, the defending champion, went on to the win over Campbell, former champion Cole, Fuchs fourth, and Keney fifth.
Max Blair, the most recent Super Late Model winner here, and Brent Rhebergen, a former winner, brought the eighteen Super Late Models to green with Blair jumping out to the early lead over Rhebergen, Chad Wright, Steve Kania, and Dave Hess Jr, also a former winner at Raceway 7. Hess was fourth at three laps as Blair enjoyed a quarter lap lead when Darrell Bossard spun in turn four. Kania got back by Hess at the green then got even with Wright for third a lap later, the solidly had the spot at lap six. Hess got by Wright for fourth at eight laps into the race. Wendall Pinckney was the next caution when he spun in turn one at nine complete. At ten laps four cars including Bob Dorman, Terry Porter, Ben Nicastri, and Rodney Pammenter piled up in turn four. Both Nicastri and Pammenter are Australian citizens in the US to purchase the racers they drove and take them back “down under”. Kania challenged for second on the green but Rhebergen held the spot. Blair continued to lengthen his advantage until Cory Ruffo spun in turn four at sixteen laps compete. At seventeen complete Kania finally got by Rhebergen with Brady Wonderling getting by Wright at eighteen laps. Hess came to third with four to go. At the checkers it was Blair, Kania, Hess, Rhebergen, and Wonderling.
The Bonnell’s Auto Sales Economods were brought to green by Buzz Seitz and Steve Haefke with Seitz leading lap one and Ashley Rogers spinning in turn three with five cars eventually being involved. Eric Wilson came by the front row on the first set of turns to lead after the restart but Haefke got back by in turn four. At six laps Nate Young spun in turn two slowing the race for the first time. Haefke, Wilson, Seitz, Jace Ferringer, and Tyler Frankenberry brought the race back to green. Frankenberry was third at seven complete. Chuck Steinle Jr spun in turn three at eight laps for the next caution. Wilson spun in turn four at ten laps in front of the field with the entire field managing to avoid contact. On the first lap back to green Wilson and Dan McEwen got together hard in turn one. Both drivers retired pitside. Haefke opened up his lead after the race resumed with Brandon Blackshear second, and Ferringer coming to third over Frankenberry at the white flag but Frankenberry got the spot back at the checkers. Buzz Seitz wound up fifth.
Don McGuire and Shaun Fawcett brought the Campbell’s Mini Storage Street Stocks to green with McGuire leading lap one and Mike Miller second. Miller was the leader at lap two. Fawcett slowed, trailing smoke, in turn two on lap three, slowing the race for the first time. Jimmy Kennerknecht challenged after green, getting alongside the leader but Miller then drove off to a three length lead at lap four. Chris McGuire came to fourth at that point but Tim Deutsch got by him two laps later. At halfway Miller was pulling further ahead with Don McGuire, Tim Deutsch, McGuire, and Kennerknecht filling out the top five with five to go. Jamie Duncan came into the top five with two to go. Deutsch got to second by the white flag but was not able to close on Miller. At the checkers it was Miller, Deutsch, Don McGuire, Chris McGuire, and Jamie Duncan.
Former champion Chad Wright and Ed Bolyard started at the front of the Evergreen Lake Park Campground CARS Crate Late Model feature with Kyle Zimmerman and Will Pinckney getting tangled in turn two. Brandon Porter spun in turn two at lap three with the top five now Wright, Bossard, Bolyard, Wendall Pinckney, and last week’s winner Dave Airgood. Airgood got by Bolyard at six laps then “half-spun” but recovered on lap seven, losing two positions. Corey Ruffo spun in turn two on eight.
